Aegyn is the fourth world in the Helyar System located in the Borealis Region of Via Aylathiya. It is a temperate **Ecumenopolis and home-world of the Human species. It is home to 1 billion individuals living directly on the surface and a further 4 billion individuals living in orbit of it or the barycenter in which it is a part. It is accompanied by a temperate binary planet known as Olaris. Once the center of Via Aylathiyan politics, Aegyn has since fallen by the wayside. Today it is a mostly derelict world still plagued with damage from wars taking place thousands of years prior to the present day.

Humans first evolved on the planet in 300,000 BCE. From there, they remained stagnant as technological development beyond fire came very slowly to them. It took until about 43,000 BCE for the planet to be warm enough for them to develop agriculture. The humans living on the planet continued steadily advancing until 31,812 BCE, when humans first contacted the Triumvirate Civilization after finding one of their probes. At that point, Aegyn was officially a part of the Triumvirate civilization until 15,089 BCE, when it became the capital of a state in the reformed Triumvirate Republic called the Yohjan Confederacy. For the next 15,000 years, Aegyn was the center of galactic politics, its massive population and production capabilities cemented it as the center of a vast trade network connecting the entirety of the Yohjan Confederacy to the markets on Aegyn.

With the collapse of the Yohjan Confederacy, Aegyn still managed to maintain its high status. In 4 CE, it became the capital of Erstes Konsortium, a nation created by Regnum Aureiga to secure Aureigan interests as well as stabilize the post-fall Yohjan Confederacy. The planet was lost several times to organizations such as the Neo-**Terrans and the Un'oit Collective, causing the capital to be changed to Thalsiedeln in 10,981 CE. Aegyn was the site of numerous battles during the First Galactic War and the Great Empyreal Crusade.

The vast majority of the people living on the planet either fled the world or were killed in the constant bombardment the planet faced. By 30,000 CE, less than one billion people called the planet home. It wasn't until a recolonization program initiated by the Boreal Federacy that the population began rising again in 91,056. It has consistently remained in the background since then, only receiving enough outside support to maintain profitable tourist areas.

History

Prehistoric Era

The planet first formed 4.9 Gya and first hosted life 4.0 Gya. The life remained as simple bacteria and archaea until 1.2 Gya when the first complex cells emerged. From there, life exploded into a large variety of organisms from plants to complex animals. Within another 500 million years, life migrated onto the land and complex ecosystems emerged as the planet's atmosphere became more and more oxygenated. In this time various mass extinction events took place thus preventing any sapient life from forming or causing the life to evolve in such a way as to make intelligence impractical. It took until mammalian life rose to prevalence 51 million years ago.

These mammals evolved into a staggering array of life ranging from mega-fauna to small rodents. One peculiar branch of these mammals, the hominids, would go on to evolve limited intelligence and fairly advanced social abilities. They went on to evolve true bipedalism 1.3 Mya and, from there, evolved true sapience. An imagination to allow the outsmarting of prey, endurance hunting abilities unmatched by any animal in nature, versatile digits allowing them to not only craft spears but also to gather a large array of foods, and a number of other advantages gave these hominids access to a unique niche not yet filled on the planet. Many variations arose. Some emphasizing strength to aid in hunting while others emphasized throwing ability.

One particular variant, known as Homo Sapiens, came to rise above the rest of their genus with the rest seemingly disappearing in the wake of Homo Sapiens. Of all the hominids, they were the most adaptable to various environments, despite having evolved on the grassy savannah. In colder regions they used fire and the skins of other animals to keep warm and, in hotter regions, their ability to sweat granted them stamina unmatched in the animal kingdom.

Pre-Space-Faring Civilizations

The first civilizations formed on the continent Yoasobi in about 43,000 BCE. These civilizations started as fairly small city-states surrounded by farmland but within the next one thousand years became sprawling empires complete with writing systems, an advanced grasp on mathematics, and territory taking up the entirety of their continent. Around this time, they began spreading out from their home-continent in the first vessels they built capable of long-distance oceanic travel. They first colonized the continent Aimer, a northerly continent cooler than Yoasobi. They went on to get the other 4 major land masses of Rin, Ninelie, Oxt, and Ayaka.

These civilizations remained fairly primitive for the next one thousand years, those living on Yoasobi entering the iron age in 34,200 BCE. They would not go on to form multi-continental civilizations until well after industrialization in 32,052 BCE. Once industrialized, it was not even a century before they discovered they were not alone in the universe.

Space-Faring Age

Earlier, in 56,188 BCE, the Triumvirate Civilization created a large number of probes to monitor primitive races in the galaxy. They had recently fought a war to secure their rights over the galaxy; it took until then to survey it. These probes were designed to alert the Triumvirate of any tampering, which would imply a technological civilization that was able to be incorporated into their ever-expanding civilization. In 31,812 BCE, humans from a more affluent nation on the planet sent a manned mission to the probe, causing it to broadcast a loud signal back home. Within the year, the Triumvirate began a diplomatic relationship with humans on Aegyn.

They drafted a treaty in which humans would receive technological support in exchange for reorganizing their species into one province under the control of the Triumvirate. While their was some relcutance to fully uniting the disparate cultures of Aegyn, the promise of advanced technology proved too alluring to pass up. Once every nation on Aegyn (and one fledgling micronation on its companion, Olaris) signed, everything changed for the planet. What followed was the drastic improvements to the productive capacity of every industry, increased quality of life for every human, and a presence in space that could have only been dreamed of a decade prior. Within several decades, exploration greatly increased to the point that every planet in the system had manned bases. They built a space-elevator linking Aegyn to Olaris in 31,038 BCE. From there, infrastructure around the planet increased greatly. Orbital rings, space ports, communication satellites, and even a rudimentary Dyson Swarm all began being constructed within the next century.

Until the 15,000's BCE, the status quo remained unchaged. The planet had become an ecumenopolis following explosive population growth brought about by the new advanced technology. With over one trillion people living on the planet by 30,000 BCE, Aegyn saw a period of sustained growth culminating with almost 50 trillion soles occupying the planet. Such a large population lived in various concentric shells built over the surface, artificially lit with power supplied from fusion reactors and, later, the Dyson Swarm which englobed its sun. Starting in the late 20,000s, large numbers of humans migrated from Aegyn to surrounding star systems.

Resources soon flowed back to Aegyn in large amounts, further cementing its important position. After 19,000 BCE, the province was renamed from the "Trans-Helyar Province" to the "Anthrov Province," named after the common human word for their species. With this renaming came a push towards hominization, especially on Aegyn. Minorities that still spoke the old languages were encouraged, usually by the denial of certain privilidges, to only speak "Lacrimosan Basic." Lacrimosan Basic, so called by humans that insisted the language should be the default interstate language. Minorities, hoping to preserve their langauge and culture, left to colonize often distant worlds such as Thalsiedeln and Petra.

Yohjan Age

Main Article: Yohjan Confederacy

A dispute amongst the leaders of provinces eventually escalated to the point in which the federal government lost the ability to issue orders to the provinces. Each one demanded more independence. When news of the dispute came to Aegyn in 15,089 BCE, humans across the system debated about the best course of action now that their rulers were giving them a chance to determine how they ruled themselves. Within the year, they decided to create a Confederation that would give each human equal representation. This new state, that they would call Jōgaen Confederatio, what is now rendered as "Yohjan Confederacy" due to language changes.

The Yohjan Confederacy expanded quickly. After reverse-engineering defunct Triumvirate warp drives, expansion took little time at all. The Helyar system was by no means crowded, in fact, it could have sustained growth until the modern day given enough planning. The reason humans began expansion was two fold. One, living on an actual planet was getting so expensive that each new generation was essentially forced to live in orbital habitats (while not a bad thing, many preferred living on planets regardless). At the center of it all was Aegyn, greatly benefiting from the rapid increase in trading partners. As more and more planets entered the Yohjan Confederacy, the wealth flowing to Aegyn only increased. Massive mega-structures began being constructed across the planet. Many of these structures remain to this day, a testament to just how high-quality they were.

Split of the Yohjan Confederacy and Warfare

As the War of the Final Transition began ravaging the galaxy in 1,285 BCE, Aegyn's economy and standing only increased. Its vast production capabilities was a major component in the early success of the Yohjan Confederacy to the point that one in five space-craft in the Yohjan Confederacy was made on Aegyn. As the war dragged on, however, it began taking a toll on the inhabitants of the planet. With the stagnation of the war effort came mass protest. Large numbers of radicals began advocating for ideas entirely incompatible with the society at the time. In 600 BCE, some of the lowest levels in the **Ecumenopolis became occupied by communes, militias, gangs, and other organizations, all of which proving to be a too large an issue for the local government to handle, what with over 90% of the resources going towards the war effort.

In 541 BCE, the Confederacy created the AI Beatrix on Aegyn. While at first it greatly turned the tide of the war in favor of the Yohjan state, its enemies soon deployed tactical artificial intelligences of their own, turning the tide of the war to be, once again, a stalemate. Upon the entrance of the Triumvirate Civilization into the conflict, conditions on Aegyn became even worse. Large portions of the populace were drafted, causing entire regions of the planet to fall into disrepair, causing criminal organizations to gain even more powerful.

Internal tension created by the War of the Final Transition finally caused the Confederacy to collapse in 0 CE, plunging Aegyn and the other core worlds into chaos. Local governments attempted to maintain order, but the collapse of the Confederacy rendered their attempts null. These local governments mostly disbanded as their generally wealthy governors fled the core worlds. Most other local governments were overrun by disgruntled citizens within the year. Aegyn's local government collapsed in early 1 CE only to be replaced by various local, mostly criminal, organizations. Sectors of the world quickly came under the subject of various warlords fighting over the vast production capabilities of Aegyn.

Konsortium Era

In 4 CE, Regnum Aureiga used its power to create Erstes Konsortium, what was essentially Aureiga's client state. Aegyn began rebuilding and maintained its status as a core world for many years afterwards. Large amounts of resources flowed in from Aureiga to rebuild the planet and its system. Hyperlanes were repaired, defenses reinforced, and normalcy largely returned with two decades.

Neo-**Terran Attacks and Occupation

In 25 CE, the Neo-**Terrans, a far-right military organization, began a siege on the planet. Eager on taking the homeworld of humanity for themselves, they unleashed the full might of Via Aylathiya's finest Magi onto Aegyn's population. At first, they were largely driven off by the local defenses. Fearing that they would lose the planet, the various Oligarchs of Erstes Konsortium largely relocated

With time, however, the Neo-**Terrans broke through in 71 CE. Without holding back, these individuals razed large portions of the planet. . By 30 CE, the Neo-**Terrans had claimed the planet for themselves in an even worse state than it was before. Most people living on the planet had either left or had died, making any form of resistance to the Neo-**Terrans impossible.

As the Neo-**Terrans began expanding their empire in Via Aylathiya, Aegyn began improving. They devoted a large amount of resources into, at the very least, creating a veneer of a civilized planet. In many places, the uppermost layer of the ecumenopolis was entirely repaired. Areas on the bottom remained impossible to tame even for the exceptionally violent magi the Neo-**Terrans employed.

Period of Stability

It remained under the control of the Neo-**Terrans until 5,621 CE when Erstes Konsortium attacked and occupied Aegyn as a symbolic invasion. The magi proved difficult to defeat, even using advanced space-craft. They employed guerilla tactics in which they would seek refuge in lower levels and emerge to fight landing troops of Erstes Konsortium. Eventually, the Konsortium gave up on taking the planet in tact and, instead, began irradiating it with extreme amounts of gamma radiation. After several years of this, the planet was so utterly depopulated the Konsortium was able to take it. The symbolic victory seemed lost after destroying so much of the surface, however. Most life on the planet was dead. Even if a lot of the infrastructure was left in tact, it still felt like a lost.

It remained under Konsortium control until it was reorganized into the Confederacy of Borealis. The Confederacy began reconstruction efforts but soon abandoned them in favor of reconstructing other more important worlds that had faced damage from the Great Empyreal Crusade. Unlike other ancient core worlds such as Petra, the UFSS deemed it beyond helping. While a few private ventures attempted to repair the planet, eventually, an archeological research organization would gain the rights to the planet, preventing reconstruction. Learning about the history of the planet proved difficult, especially as vast parts of it flooded.

It remained mostly untouched for the next 60,000 years. During the War of the Ancients, the Quintet Payotari Association shelled and then occupied the planet to demoralize humanity. However, the planet had become so minor by then that few seemed to even notice. The QPA abandoned the planet after only occupying it for a week.

It has remained in a similar condition to this day. Islands of metal poking out of the surface of the waves were allowed to be colonized in 91,056 CE. For the first time in almost 100,000 years, Aegyn has had a population of more than ten billion, mostly inhabiting these islands.

Geography

Aegyn's oceans occupy over 80% of the planet's surface. In the past, the figure was much lower at 65% before the Split of the Yohjan Confederacy in which the planet was attacked dozens of times. The planet's original continents of Yoasobi, Aimer, Rin, Ninelie, Oxt, and Ayaka have all since been buried by the remains of the once great ecumenopolis covering the planet. Aegyn possessed 4 concentric spheres built above the surface. Atop each of these rings was a great city covering most of its surface. These shells also had large amounts of water contained within artificial lakes, oceans, and rivers. Large pipelines containing coolants stretched across the planet, siphoning heat from Aegyn to be radiated into space.

When Aegyn began falling into disrepair, various sections of the shells began collapsing, dumping the water and coolant contained in them into lower layers. By this point, energy use on the planet had significantly fallen, only leading to a minor increase in temperature for the world. Unchecked plant-growth began overtaking the layers. By the time the UFSS formed, most of the highest layers had collapsed. The regular bombardment served to almost completely flatten all but the lowest shells as well as greatly increase the amount of water on the planet. The original continents have all flooded, leaving only artificial structures poking out of the waves. The bombardment killed most native life to the point that few of the original species remain extant.

What remains of the "land" is mostly sandbars made up of smoothened shards of metal, plastic, rock, and other common substances. The largest of these islands manage to house limited ecosystems made mostly of genetically modified or foreign species. Few animals live in these environments. Aegyn's oceans are devoid of multicellular life, the large amounts of coolant in the water killed most complex life. Most of the ocean's inhabitants are bacteria which managed to adapt to the polluted seas or genetically modified algae which maintain Aegyn's atmosphere. Several newly-created artificial islands also exist on the planet which serve to house the newest wave of colonists.

Civilization

Only one Hyperlane leads to Aegyn and the Helyar system of which it is a part. This hyperlane is almost 100,000 years old and was likely built by the Neo-**Terrans some time in the first millennium. Remains of older hyperlanes are common around the planet's system. This hyperlane mostly serves the other planets in the Helyar system who almost all have higher populations or levels of infrastructure.

Aegyn is notoriously hard to govern given its nature. Many criminals and organizations reside in the lowest layers. Anywhere from deeply-bored tunnels reaching well into the mantle to the ruins of space stations orbiting the planet, one can find dangerous criminals, rogue machines, and all other manner of unsavory individuals the government would rather do without. During the late War of the Ancients, the government of the Confederacy of Borealis would release war criminals, deserters, and certain prisoners of war onto Aegyn. This practice continued well beyond the War of the Ancients until the early 90,000's CE. Aegyn's isolated position and lack of resources made it the natural choice for disposing of inconvenient individuals without outright killing them.

By the time the program ended, Aegyn was already teaming with a large number of underground organizations and dangerous individuals. The local government of the region decided to cull the population of the planet by subjugating Aegyn to punishing levels of radiation, only serving to drive the populace underground. When the latest recolonization effort began in the early 91,000's, the colonists had to contend with limited funds, hostile natives descended from deportees, and a dangerous atmosphere. Despite being the home-world of humanity, only a relative handful of individuals volunteered for recolonization. These individuals exclusively live in one walled city, Tshenst. Tschenst is the one place on the planet which can be considered habitable by legal standards. Everywhere else on the planet, especially underground, is a hostile environment foreign to most living in post-scarcity civilizations.
