Afrika, also known as Gamma Leporis IV, is a warm temperate terra human colony in the Milky Way Galaxy. Currently, the planet is going through a stage of growth and is predicted to become an ecumenopolis, a planet with a city covering the entirety of its surface, within several centuries. Throughout its modern history, the planet has been a center for Human culture despite being fairly minor in comparison throughout most of its history. It was terraformed to be the headquarters of AfrikaCorp. Now, the planet is owned mostly by those that live on it.

History

The first individuals to colonize the planet were humans from a continent on Earth called Africa, hence the name of the planet. The planet originally had a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide in edition to liquid seas of comparatively saline oceans to those of Earth. Even so, compared to the usually barren worlds that were common around stars of its sun's type, the planet was easy to terraform and became fully habitable in 2712

Terragen, a much larger company at the time, was paid a large sum of money to terraform the planet as well as clean up the system to reduce the probability of asteroid strikes.

Afrika before terraforming

With the end of the terraforming near, AfrikaCorp was finally able to set up their headquarters on the planet. Using a whole planet at the time for a headquarters was a status symbol and proved to be a valuable for increasing the company's' reputation among the business world.

Since then, the planet had come under the control of various nations or polities in its history. The planet has been untouched in most wars in history apart from a brief siege by one group during the Split of the Lactean Confederacy.

The planet was an independent nation when the LaC fell. It was governed as an aristocratic plutocracy like so many other planets within the Milky Way at the time. After a period of independence, lasting almost five centuries, the planet came under the control of Cassiopeia Consortium when Afrikan forces surrendered to the overwhelming power of the Consortium's navy. The nobles of Afrika were slowly integrated into a larger noble family within the Consortium.

For the next several centuries, the planet remained under the control of the Consortium until it was dissolved in 21829, becoming a part of the recently rebuilt United Federation of Star Systems.

After this, the planet's population grew slowly. For several millennia, its population stagnated as many of those born on the planet left to live or work closer to the Earth. Later on, the planet would experience a large growth in population thanks to a refugee crisis as many fled almost entirely depopulated sectors of the galaxy to looking for a place that would accept them.

The planet is now becoming an ecumonopolis, as the large arcologies scattered across the planet reached their limit.

Culture

Current Afrika map

The Afrikan culture, has been enhanced by the large influx of individuals in the eighty-first millennia. Individuals of many species, not just the original humans that made up most of its population, came to this world. The diverse population created a unique blend of the fairly African-based culture of the nation and newer cultures from many other worlds. It became a center of art and music as these ideas mixed to form genres that have long since died out, causing a resurgence in many once-dead forms of art and music that would not have been possible without the planet's unique position.

Physical Description

First map of Afrika before terraforming

The planet has a diameter of12408 km giving it a gravity of 1.1 G. It has a semimajor axis of 1.01 AU giving it a year length of 334.6 days. It once had a rotation period of 14 hours and 48 minutes but now it has a more earthlike rotation of 1.005 days.

Afrika is a very young world as it and the system is only 139.9 million years old.

Climate

Before terraforming, Afrika had a very low atmospheric pressure of 0.3 but now it has a pressure of 0.96 ATM. It has a mean temperature of 17°Cand due to its very low axial tilt of 2° and 5’ there are virtually no seasons. The planet used to have large polar caps, but they have been used to dilute the briny seas of the planet as well as supply water to orbital habitats all across the system.

Afrika is a warm tropical world in most of the low areas but the mountains do have alpine life of which some of the other cultures life off.
