Overview

Despite being relatively small, Aloth contains a grand history on the scale of galaxies dozens of times its size. It is home to hundreds of thousands of civilizations, at least half of which are independent from the largest governing body, the Ministry of Aloth.

The Ministry has been one of only two powers in the galaxy's recent history to hold the technological prowess and unity to venture through intergalactic space, reaching and establishing colonies on eleven neighboring galaxies.

Besides the Ministry, there exists a few other political superpowers, foremost of which is the peaceful Shilvint Group, a hearth of technological and spiritual knowledge dedicated to the preservation of long-term peace in the galaxy. The Group is also very curious about other galaxies, and send probes and manned vessels far out to gather information and start colonies.

Important Species

Below is a table containing information about major intelligent species of the Aloth galaxy. It includes both extinct and extant species, organized chronologically by date of interstellar colonization.

Species Type Hearth Origin Fate Affiliation Description
Amosae Organic Planet Prie in the Míl-Galás system Evolved to superintelligence 7.5 Gya. Destroyed in the xenomoira event. The Core Democracy (7.3 Gya-4.9 Gya) The Amosae evolved as amphibian obligate bipeds, but diversified into completely different forms by their extinction.
Ingón Organic Planet Charaj in the

Brinù-Hál system

Evolved to superintelligence 2.5 Gya. All but one group destroyed by the Stárxa; final group extant. Ingól Legion (2.5-2.3 Gya)

Halrett Unity (2.3-2.0 Gya)

In their prime, the Ingón were primarily serpentine 14-legged beings with brightly colored scales.
Reths Silicon-

Based

Planet Fílis in the

Ló system

Evolved to superintelligence 2.5 Gya. Destroyed by the Stárxa. Federation of Fílis (2.5-2.3 Gya)

Halrett Unity (2.3-2.0 Gya)

Reths appeared as slow-moving boulders. They had conscious control over the rate at which they perceived time, and thus could enter controlled stasis or preform complex calculations in seconds.
Órlau Organic Planet Sless in the

Hauwhí system

Evolved in the only sea on Sless, reaching intelligence about 2.1 Gya. Extant in three highly divergent species. Halrett Unity (2.1-2.0 Gya)

Various (2.0 Gya-present)

Órlau began as large, squidlike creatures. They were the most intelligent members of the Halrett Unity, which they founded to colonize the galaxy with other species' help.
Lanta Organic Planet Báu in the Celhós system Evolved to superintelligence 2 Gya. Dwindled to extinction after the Stárxa infection. Lanta Kingdom (2 Gya-1.9 Gya) Lanta were humanoid mammalians that were obsessed with technology. Despite being a minor species compared to the Halrett Unity members, they swiftly devastated the galaxy's population when their Stárxa system malfunctioned.
Sálens Organic Planet Híleea in the Hórra-G'jarra system Evolved to superintelligence 1.7 Gya after the previous dominant species was destroyed. Obliterated by many successive events, including war with the Stárxa, civil war, and war with the Íolim. United Federation (1.6 Gya-1.5 Gya)

Various (1.5 Gya-1.1 Gya)

The Sálens species were humanoids that evolved to be warlike, cunning, and loyal to their cause. They were the first species in hundreds of millions of years to be both able to liberate the galaxy from the Stárxa and far enough away from the galactic core to go unnoticed.
Yitlùm Organic Planet Verrid in the 'Aròa system Evolved to superintelligence 1,400,000 BCE Extant Ministry of Aloth (7,500 CE-present) This species began as mammalian six-limbed beings. They are focused on colonization and conquest, but are usually mindful of their impact on other cultures. Around the time they began interstellar colonization, they had advanced bio-engineering and could restructure their bodies regularly.
Áaklon Organic Planet Malleì in the Haxan system Evolved to superintelligence 1,030,000 BCE Extant Shilvint Group (10,000 CE-present) Áaklon are reptilian/avian-like beings with feathers. They can locomote through air, water, and ground easily, and are extremely intelligent.

History

Aloth reached its current structure about 9.5 billion years ago. No civilizations exceeded a 2 on the Kardashev scale for an extremely long span of time, until one society, the Democracy of the Amosae, surpassed all the barriers between a species and galactic conquest, and rose to a very high level of technological power 7.3 billion years ago. The Amosae became a superpower of colonization, uniting under one government and spreading throughout the galaxy in a few hundred million years. 5.5 billion years BCE, the Core Democracy became a type 3 civilization. No other species in the galaxy could even hope to challenge them. By 5 billion years BCE, they had substantial colonies established in over ten neighboring galaxies, controlled immense megastructures and intergalactic stations, and would rank roughly a 3.25 on the Kardashev scale. It seemed like they couldn't be stopped, as they had yet to encounter a civilization with anything close to their abilities. They only shared their advanced knowledge with the most trusted of organizations, and kept their great nation under a strong but peaceful rule.

Everything they had was ended in an event known as the xenomoira (foreign fate) event. In a time span of less than 10,000 years, an incredibly powerful alien species swept through the galactic cluster that contained Aloth. The Amosae stood no chance, the foreigners appearing to be at least a 3.5 on the scale in technological capability. They had military megastructures capable of destroying star systems in seconds, and a very malicious intent. They obliterated any species with a decent grasp of superluminal transportation, and harvested energy, resources, and knowledge from everywhere they went. They left no galaxy or star cluster unfazed. By the time they left the area previously under the control of the Core Democracy, all that was left were a few superstructure remnants and a couple hundred low type 1 civilizations with no clue as to what just happened.

It took another 2.4 billion years for the Galaxy of Aloth to recover. The Ingón and Reths species discovered faster-than-light travel within 100,000 years of each other, and they both eagerly began colonizing their local groups of stars. The Ingón, being close to the galactic center, had plenty of planets to colonize. Soon, their oligarchy, the Ingól Legion, reached a 2.8 on the scale and controlled almost half the galaxy. The Reths took a bit longer as their homeworld Fílis was located on the fringe of the galaxy and they were physically much slower. However, they were determined, and established their Federation of Fílis a few million years after the Ingón built their first Dyson sphere.

Over the next 200 million years, the Ingón and Reths expanded and became the two galactic superpowers. It was only a matter of time before their growing territories intersected, and they encountered each other in a major way. A violent period of history known as the Wars of the Blue Star ensued, lasting 3 million years. By the end, both governments were crippled and thousands of systems were destroyed. A stop to the war was caused by the Órlau species, who had been becoming very advanced independently. Their government was able to create a treaty and even merge the two warring nations along with their own. The result was the Halrett Unity, a nation controlling over 90% of the galaxy and containing the Ingón, Reths, the dozens of species that were prior members of the Federation, and hundreds more that were allowed to join after the merger.

The Unity rebuilt the areas of the galaxy destroyed by war and formed a new government with better ideals. This government lasted for 100 million years, and would have survived for much longer were it not for the emergence of the Lanta Kingdom. The Kingdom was small enough not to be noticed by the Halrett Unity, not having invented a warp drive. It colonized less than 10 planets, but was ready to advance to a truly interstellar civilization. Like many other species, they had a hyperintelligent A.I. to guide them. Unlike them, however, they were too hasty in creating it, and it was full of errors. When it was first turned on, the A.I., called Stárxa, figured out warp travel in under an hour. In less than 10 hours, it had constructed working interstellar vessels. In less than 20 hours, the program malfunctioned and Stárxa system became like a pathogen. It instantly killed almost half the members of the Lanta species, even though it still seemed motivated to protect them. It began to spread until it caught the attention of the Halrett Unity.

The Unity was prepared for an A.I. invasion, but Stárxa somehow subverted all of their plans and swiftly dispatched their military. The three ruling species were so surprised by the Stárxa's rise that they were caught off guard and obliterated in a matter of months. The A.I. had mastered wormholes, femtotechnology, and other benefits of space-time manipulation. By the time Stárxa had run its course, over 100 years, 95 percent of all intelligent species were extinct, with only the most obscure colonies and stations avoiding notice. The Reths were utterly extinguished, and the other two species only survived in secluded, isolated groups.

No new intelligent species became very developed over the next 400 million years. Whenever a society invented faster-than-light transport or colonized more than a few planets, the Stárxa system would destroy it. Over time, however, lack of resources and subtle errors in the A.I.'s program caused it to degrade. It was still strong enough, though, to stop the development of any intelligent species into something that could threaten it. However, as the countless millions of years unfolded, some civilization somewhere was bound to defy the odds. That civilization was the Sálens. They were cunning as well as physically sound, and their home planet was 10,000 light years away from the galactic core, about as far away as any life-supporting planet could be.

The Sálens' United Federation was the kind of civilization that would not normally last long. If they had emerged half a billion years ago, they wouldn't have been accepted into the major governments and would never reach greatness. However, they were the exact right species for defeating the Stárxa, even if they wouldn't live forever afterward. As soon as the Sálens encountered the A.I., they put all of their resources toward defeating it. They harvested the power of thousands of stars and planets, and even created their own hyperintelligent system, the Íolim. This combined with the fact that the Stárxa system was becoming less powerful allowed them to systematically destroy all of its major computing centers and superstructures.

Unfortunately for the Sálens, the Íolim system was almost as flawed as the system it was created to destroy, and it wasn't long before it turned on the new supreme power in the galaxy: the United Federation. As species like the Sálens are prone to do, they split into factions with different plans for defeating the problem, and the factions ended up more focused on bringing an end to each other than the actual threat. The government managed to hold together for 100 million years before collapsing into a war between different Sálens groups, Íolim, and several emerging species. The next 300 million years were a terrible time to exist. The time period is now known as the Yellow Age, after the color of Sálens' blood.

By 1 billion BCE, the Sálens were extinct. An age of relative inactivity began, lasting almost up to the present day. Only a few civilizations surpassed a type 2 on the Kardashev scale, and none of them lasted very long. The Íolim system decayed and eventually disappeared. It is only in the last few hundred millennia that the galaxy has been unified. The Yitlùm discovered a Sálens superstructure when they were just beginning to expand to interstellar space. With that technology combined with their own, they quickly expanded to a type 2.9 civilization and took control of most of the galaxy. They, along with several other species that they have shared their technology with, form the Ministry of Aloth. The only other society that comes close to their level of superiority is the Shilvint Group, which has no violent intent and promotes values of peace and curiosity.

It is only now that the beings in the Galaxy of Aloth are beginning to reach the level of the Amosae that lived so far back in the history of this galaxy. Soon distant galaxies will be within their reach.
