While it is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way Galaxy, the galaxy, which contains over 10 billion stars, is observable from Earth as a faint cloud and is one of the few galaxies visible with the naked eye in dark areas. It is the largest satellite galaxy of the Milky Way and has been subject to colonization and integration by some remnant Human forces after the War of the Decamillennial Transition. Even prior to the use of wormholes, several long-distance warp expeditions had reached the galaxy and several systems on the edges of the galaxy had been colonized (the minimum distance between the two galaxies is less than the width of Milky Way).

During the 9th to the 15th millenium, the Ysau Republic which is based on the outer rim expanded throughout the core, slowly dominating the central area with about three and a half million colonized systems among the many billions in the area. Around this time, the Confederacy of Borealis (or Borealis) was also expanding in the galactic southwest, setting the large Tarantula Nebula between the human and the Ysau space. While the Ysau was nominally under the Confederacy, it was in all but name an independent state, and there were occasional fighting around the nebula between local human and Ysau sectors. After the outbreak of the War of the Decamillenial Transition, the Ysau emerged relatively intact in comparison to the shattered humanity, and Ysau began to expand slowly into said nebula.

While the Ysau Republic became the dominant power in LMC after the Split of the Confederacy of Borealis, there were multiple large interstellar civilizations around the less-dense fringes of the galaxy, including the vast human space and the loyalists of the Confederacy. As the Confederacy was reformed as the Confederacy of Borealis, specifically with the primus inter pares of the United Federation of Star Systems (UFSS) being centered in Milky Way, it began a campaign to integrate the Magellanic Clouds. While the smaller Small Magellanic Cloud reintegrated relatively peacefully, the Ysau Republic specifically resisted the annexation backed by non-human allies and refused to join the Confederacy. This culminated in the long stretched First Magellanic War between the 23rd and 25th millenia, in which the Ysau Republic and its allies were eventually subjugated and the galaxy annexed into UFSS.

Rough political map of the Large Magellanic Cloud, circa 20,000. Stars which are not marked could be uninhabited, pre-interstellar, or part of a civilization too small to include in this map.

Despite the annexation, many of the former Ysau leaders still held considerable powers over the galaxy, as UFSS' annexation of the galaxy meant that it was administered as a subregion of the Milky Way instead of its own galaxy. Continued discontentment with general ignoring of the region by the Earth-centered authorities initiated the Magellanic Troubles, a long-lasting, low-intensity conflict that has lasted almost continuously since the end of the First War to 100,000, with occasional interruptions. In more recent years, insurgent forces have been rebuilding itself, and with highly increased intensity since 99,950, there are concerns that a proper Second Magellanic War had already started.
