Narenna is a blue hypergiant and Luminous Blue Variable in the Lareas Galaxy. The star is the centerpiece of the Crown Cluster, and the capital of the Union of Narenna.

Overview

Narenna is a luminous blue variable on the cusp of becoming a wolf-rayet star, and is one of the most extreme objects in the Lareas Galaxy. However, because of its hostility to all, it was viewed as neutral ground, and was the sight of the treaty that ended the War of the Narenna Cluster and created the Union of Narenna. The star is known for its huge outbursts and relatively high metallicity, and is currently being starlifted to build a vast dyson swarm.

Narenna formed around 3.3 million years ago, as a high mass star, one of the highest initial masses ever recorded, rivalling even Treana's stars. As a result of its high mass, Narenna evolved quickly off the main sequence and expanded into an Ofpe/WN9 star. Around 200,000 years ago, it experienced a large outburst (a supernova impostor) which expanded it to its current size and temperature.

History

After Narenna's formation, a large terrestrial world was captured alarmingly close to the star. For a while, the star kept on expanding and contracting in its variable cycle, until the warring civilizations of the Narenna Cluster decided to mark this star as neutral territory and sign a peace treaty here. When the civilizations that would form the Union of Narenna came here to build their capital, this planet was completely disassembled to construct a high-power starlifting mechanism to extract the material necessary to assemble the great Narenna Dyson Swarm, easily the largest dyson swarm in the local neighborhood. However, a good portion of the swarm, including the capital station, Goros Station, was destroyed in a horrific atrocity orchestrated by Talken the Ruthless of the Kormin Empire, and the small spats between the Union and the other two nations escalated into a full-on war which has been going ever since. Goros Station was since rebuilt, and no other assault force has made it this far into Union territory since.

Properties

Narenna is a Luminous Blue Variable relatively close to becoming a wolf-rayet star. It is the brightest star in the entire Lareas Galaxy by a long shot, before the dyson swarm was constructed, and has a very high mass-loss rate, from both the high solar wind and the huge starlifting mechanism used to construct the aforementioned dyson swarm.

Its solar wind is very strong, and leads to a heavy mass-loss rate per year, discounting starlifting. However, the mass-loss rate is over ten times higher, when you add in the starlifting mechanism, and the material extracted from the star has been used to construct the most massive dyson swarm in the local universe.

Owing to its large mass, it will soon turn into a wolf-rayet star and go supernova soon after that. However, the starlifting mechanism does more than extract material for the dyson swarm, it also drastically decreases the star's lifespan. After roughly 150,000 years, when it should have turned into a wolf-rayet star, it will have decreased heavily and be entirely safe to the surrounding region. By this time, much of the resources will have gone towards constructing similar structures in nearby star systems, instead of conquering the entire galaxy with a vast fleet, which is actually not really necessary.

Variability

Narenna, due to its brightness and early discovery, gives its name to a class of variables known as Narenna Variables. These show distinct quiescent and outburst states During the quiescent phase, LBVs lie along a diagonal band in the H–R diagram called the Instability Strip, with the more luminous examples having hotter temperatures.

LBV outbursts generally occur when the mass loss increases and an extremely dense stellar wind creates a pseudo-photosphere. The temperature drops until the wind opacity starts to decrease, meaning all LBV outbursts reach a temperature around 8,000–9,000 K. The bolometric luminosity during outbursts is considered to remain largely unchanged, but the visual luminosity increases as radiation shifts from the ultraviolet into the visual range. Detailed investigations have shown that some LBVs appear to change luminosity from minimum to maximum. S Doradus has been calculated to be less luminous at maximum brightness (minimum temperature), possibly as a result of potential energy going into expansion of a substantial portion of the star.

Rare larger eruptions can appear as long-lasting under-luminous supernovae, and have been termed supernova impostors. The cause of the eruptions is unknown, but the star survives and may experience multiple eruptions. Inielus and Palxon are the only known examples in the Flower Galaxy, and Narenna has luckily not shown such an eruption.
