"The Quick-Shift Transit System is one of the most important creations we've been able to develop - It frees up our transit ships to an incredible degree, it allows for easier movement, and it lets people move to and from all sorts of worlds with ease - It's the ultimate tool for destroying borders between allies."

The Quick-Shift Transit System is a piece of technology that was developed by the three left-libertarian allies of Verpletter - The Commune Federation, The Sonoran Union, and the Xavier Co-Operative Protectorate.

The system is designed to be able to transport individuals, or groups of individuals, from one celestial body - Be it a planet, a moon, a dwarf planet, an asteroid, space station, etc - to another, provided that it has a Transit Station installed, almost instantly. It is available for utilization for both the public and the defensive forces it is located within.

Due to it being a combined effort, Quick-Shift Transit Systems are located throughout the three Major Factions who helped to design it, though they have shared the technology with several minor Factions whom they support, as well as the Cårölus Syndicate, whom they wish to bring into their alliance. Many other Factions have also attempted to copy the idea, either building their own systems, or reverse-engineering the technology from systems that they have annexed. While some successes have come from this, there are also some systems with major flaws. Regardless though, the technology has become fairly widespread throughout Verpletter, and has allowed for it's constant conflicts to maintain themselves in certain regions for much longer than they otherwise would have, but also bringing great freedom of movement to those not in a combat zone.

The Quick-Shift Transit System operates on a similar method to that of a standard Teleportation System located within many ships and Space Stations - The individual has their consciousness taken from them and placed into a back-up set of systems surrounding them, and their body is then deconstructed. Both their consciousness and atomic structures are then sent along a series or relay stations that are constructed throughout the solar system, until they reach their predestined Transit Station.

Upon reaching the Transit Station, the body will first be re-materialized, and then the consciousness will be stored in the computer systems. Operators there will then place the consciousness of the person back into their body, thus completing the transit.

This entire process can take up to a maximum of thirty seconds, thanks to high-speed relay technology, basic Artificial Intelligence assistance, and the work of the operators, who are rotated every six hours, so each Transit System has 24-hour manpower.

Construction Requirements

Due to the nature of the technology in question, the Quick-Shift Transit System is capable of transporting individuals between any body in a given solar system, provided that it has a Transit Station. This however, does come with a great number of requirements that are needed for the system to work.

Relay Stations

Relay Stations are necessary in order to send the mind and body of the person from one station to the next. They provide a network of pathways, akin to a road, that take the mind and body to their location at the atomic level. Each Relay Station will receive, and then send along to the next station, all the data needed until that person reaches their destination. This process continues until the person arrives at their destination. Due to having a limited range, hundreds, if not thousands, of Relay Stations are required.

Relay Stations can also double up as other facilities. For example, many stations also export food that they grow, or act as pit stops. Some Relay Stations can even have permanent populations in the millions. In many cases, being a Relay Station can even be a secondary function of a Station, as it can perform other duties and roles in the meantime.

Transit Stations

Transit Stations are required for the use of the Quick-Shift Transit System. A Transit Station as a title can be slightly misleading - It can be little more than a moderately sized room in a larger building, provided that building has the communication relays, computer systems, and energy production and architecture needed for the teleportation. Many buildings have been constructed specifically for the purposes of sending and receiving people, and these are typically refereed to as Transit Stations, though this is by no means the only type of building capable of receiving people.

These systems are specifically aligned with Relay Stations and other Transit Stations in order to ensure the safety and the speed of these teleportations.

There are a number of limitations to the Quick-Shift Transit System, which limit the ways in which it may be used.

The use of the Quick-Shift Transit System requires the construction of hundreds or thousands of Stations in order to send people from place to place. This is because each station only has a limited range of how far it can transmit information to the next station. This also makes it impossible to transport individuals from solar System to Solar System, unless extensive efforts are made to construct the millions of stations needed to teleport between solar systems.

The Marx System in the Commune Federation is an example of this, as it has connected several of it's neighbouring solar systems into one large network. However, this only extends to six solar systems, though there are still plans to expand it. There are several other systems where there are interconnected Quick-Shift Transit Systems, though these tend to be no larger than three systems large.

In cases where this is not the case, there is still a widespread need for transport craft between one solar system and another.

Star-Ships cannot have Transit Stations. This is because Star-Ships are not bound to celestial bodies, and thus there are a great number of opportunities for things to go wrong, as it is very easy to make a miscalculation when sending a person, even with the use of AI.

Star-Ships must use a different system of teleportation, which is calibrated to the needs present within a Star-Ship. Star Ships can however, send individuals to Transit Stations.

Widespread Use

Throughout The Commune Federation, The Sonoran Union, and the Xavier Co-Operative Protectorate, the Quick-Shift Transit System is used very regularly, allowing for free movement of people throughout entire solar systems. They are considered to be absolutely paramount to the way of life in these Factions now, and have helped to strengthen the bonds between the allies, and within their own populations with one another.

There are many cases, for example, in which an individual may spend the majority of their working time in one solar system, but the majority of their non-working time in another solar system. This is no longer seen as an oddity anymore, but a common part of living within these Factions.
