The Triumvirate Civilization was a sovereign nation existing from 99,871 BCE until 23,333 CE located in and around Via Lacrimosa. It controlled the entirety of Via Lacrimosa and its satellites from 17,520 BCE to 15,089 BCE. After 15,089 BCE it remained as a great power controlling a large portion of the Ventemir and portions of Martial Space. When it lost the War of the Final Transition in 201 CE, it had to flee to its relatively minor holdings in the Martial Space region. These remnants of the civilization carried on until 23,333 CE before a joint invasion by Drusidia and Sagittarium that destroyed it in its entirety. As a polity, it operated as an autocracy with three leaders. These leaders were Legio, The Administrator, and Molonov. The Triumvirate Civilization was the first known Via Lacrimosan nation to achieve the status of "Superpower" as it was capable of influence on the scale of the entire universe.

Forming in 99,871 BCE, the nation existed over 75,000 years before it came to control Via Lacrimosa. The most distant artifacts attributed to this civilization can be found in Aylothn, where they likely had a small outpost. It seems that, had it not fallen, the Triumvirate would have been able to hold influence over most of the nearest galaxies to Via Lacrimosa. Internal plans to move into Herschel Space exist, implying that their long-term goal was universal dominance.

The Triumvirate gave most of its subjects limited self-governance, technology, and information in exchange for loyalty. Newly-discovered species would be reorganized into a province and given a large number of star systems. Species that refused were attacked relentlessly until they were subjugated. The Triumvirate's leaders did not believe in genocide, preferring subjugating their enemies to exterminating them.

As the most recent of the "ancient civilizations" in the Universe, The Triumvirate has had long-lasting effects on the modern Via Lacrimosa galaxy. It introduced the concept of interstellar civilization to most species in the galaxy. Even simple things such as the concept of flags and capital worlds were all adopted from the Triumvirate (although some species developed these systems independently). The Triumvirate started a precedent of valuing the idea of expansionism as well, and to this day, its expansionist tendencies are mimicked by many. The Triumvirate is usually regarded as a "precursor civilization" to most civilizations in Via Lacrimosa and the galaxies immediately around it.

Imperial History

Formation

The Triumvirate was founded on Veritas by a treaty involving its three leaders. Most of their origins are unknown. Using their vast power and access to resources, Legio, The Administrator, and Molonov, collectively known as The Three, began colonizing the satellites of Via Lacrimosa. Already an interstellar presense when they united, The Three were quickly able to advance to the point of harnessing the power of a Kardashev II civilization in 97,138 BCE.

Early Imperial Era

The first species they came into contact with were the Atlins in the Ventemir galaxy. They were highly disorganized and hardly had any presence on an interstellar scale. The Triumvirate, despite having a technological disadvantage, conquered the Atlins in a campaign lasting a little less than a year.

After conquering the Atlins in 97,109 BCE, the Triumvirate established a unified government over them. They repressed all rebellions while simultaneously greatly improving quality of life for them. All rebellions stopped within the next several decades. Another nearby fledgling civilization, that of the Orcubor, allowed themselves to be annexed in 96,933 BCE after learning of what happened with the Atlins.

After gaining sovereignty over all of Ventemir in about 90,000 BCE, they set their sights on the Ouranir and Florescence galaxies, both home to pre-existing civilizations as well. In a series of easily-won battles, the Triumvirate gained control over both of these galaxies whose total territories increased the Triumvirate's size by over ten times. From here, the Three split apart, each residing in one of their three conquered galaxies. Molonov moved to Florescence, The Administrator remained in Ventemir, and Legio moved to Martial Space, a region of Via Lacrimosa. Legio colonized dozens of systems on their way to Martial Space, greatly increasing the size of the Triumvirate again.

In 62,097 BCE, each of the domains of The Three, added together, had sovereignty over a galaxy's worth of stars and would soon become a Kardashev III civilization. Their rapid expansion was in large part due to autonomous probes harvesting the energy of entire systems to build more of themselves. With increasingly advanced faster-than-light travel and communication, fast expansion became exponentially faster.

The Sedrua-Triumvirate War

Main Article: Sedrua-Triumvirate War

The only advanced nation near to the Triumvirate by the 62,000s was Sedrua, located in the relatively nearby Aylothn galaxy. Even though Sedrua was far older than the Triumvirate, it was a fading power. It maintained a presence in Via Lacrimosa as well; however, these holdings were poorly funded and small. Many of the nation's leaders, known as Sydiah's Architects, grew increasingly worried about the thaumaturgical abilities of The Three, all of which having long since surpassed many of them. As of 62,000 BCE, The Administrator in particular grew to surpass even that of their then-leader, Vurilia Jiutopati.

Fearing that Triumvirate would soon grow to threaten their homeland, Sedrua launched a preemptive strike against the Ventemir, Florescence, and Ouranir galaxies. Defenses in Florescence were overwhelmed within weeks and the galaxy soon fell, forcing Molonov to flee. Sedrua continued onwards to Ouranir, causing its defenses to fall within the next century leaving only the core unconquered. It was Ventemir that proved to be difficult to invade. Not only had the Triumvirate withdrawn nearly all of its military assets into Ventemir once the war started, but the Administrator's abilities made moving ships into the galaxy difficult.

In response, Sedrua began using large numbers of Sydiah's Architects against the Triumvirate. The Architects allowed for fleets to pass through the Administrator's defenses by counteracting its abilities. Sedura ordered virtually every Architect to enter Ventemir in a large assault. Sedruan generals and oligarchs were confident that their attack would overwhelm the Triumvirate. In a grueling period lasting almost five hundred years, Sedrua used vast amounts of resources in the war to destroy the Administrator's core and tracking down the rest of The Three. While occupied with these objectives, they also had to contend with Atlin, Orcubor, Ravin, and Llaen guerilla forces. The subjects of The Triumvirate were loyal to The Three. Even after experiencing many defeats, the arrogant Sedruan leadership refused to change their tactics, even as many generals on the ground requested more reinforcements and a change in tactics.

Towards the end of the war, The Three unleashed numerous weapons beyond the capabilities of the Sedruan forces. These weapons included the ERS Moon Signal and the VSS Readymade in addition to craft that have still not been identitified to this day. What exactly many of those weapons were is unknown. The Triumvirate used these craft to great effect, pushing Sedrua out of Ventemir, Ouranir, Florescence, and, eventually, out of Via Lacrimosa altogether, ending the war in 59,700 BCE. Sedrua entered another state of decline due to this defeat. The large amount of resources the war took and the reparations it was forced to pay caused it to remain isolationist for the remainder of its ancient history.

Second Imperial Era

Immediately following Sedrua's defeat, the Triumvirate began rebuilding its damaged territory. At first, they only sunk resources into the galaxy for the sake of driving out remaining Sedrua influence. The Triumvirate deported vast numbers of Sedruan colonists, the species called Arkhos, to Aylothn to take advantage of their infrastructure. Even so, Arkho holdouts would remain until well after the fall of the Triumvirate. These holdouts went on to form the Molkor, an Arkho-decendant species.

The Triumvirate ruled all of its possessions fairly, often transplanting useful species from one part of the galaxy to another to use as local governance. During this time, The Triumvirate began embarking on various large-scale projects. Legio spent most of their time in Via Lacrimosa overseeing the creation of Holo's Ring, bent on unraveling the mysteries of thaumaturgy. The Administrator spent most of its time fixated on improving its military. Given its large size and inability to move, it invested in large amounts of defenses around its core. In its pursuits, it created what would later be known as the ERS Moon Signal, TRS Last Waltz, TRS Night Running, and hundreds of other advanced weapons. Lastly, Molonov became fascinated with what he called "The Empyrean." He began using the Florescence galaxy as a testing ground to explore "higher realities" as he called them.

This era saw a golden age of peace in the galaxy, at least from the largest of perspectives. On a small scale, many of the governors of provinces became discontent with their limited power. As time went on, many more became discontent until the entire nation experienced cohesion issues. Many of the provinces began defying the Three's government for their own gain while skirmishes over resources were common. Many of the different ethnicities and cultures forced into one province created issues as well.

The Three did not take note of this until 16,910 BCE, when its provinces were consistently failing to meet the quotas for certain resources. They had lost the ability to adequately police interstellar space, having long since devoted their limited militias to fighting over resources. Shipments would constantly be stolen, forcing the nations to further rely on pirating other nations' resources.

Reform

Meeting with various governors, representatives, monarchs, and other leaders, The Three negotiated the terms of what would be a federal republic. The provinces finally had the chance to decide which form of government they would take. With this power, the provinces, reorganized into states, largely became monarchies or technocracies. Only one state chose to be a democracy, the Yohjan Confederacy which itself was made up of smaller states.

Since each species had roughly the same population, each state had equal representation in the newly-formed Senate. The senate had broad powers, greatly limiting The Three's control over the states. In return for protection by the Triumvirate's military and the stability this granted, the states had to tribute resources to the Three who would form the newly established federal government. The Lowuks Entente had a special place in the arrangement as portions of it would be federal districts used to govern the republic.

The newly formed Triumvirate Republic, usually stilled called the "Triumvirate," was the second phase of the Triumvirate's existence.

Republic History

Following the reforms, the senate began using federal resources to build interstate infrastructure such as Hyperlanes to better fascilitate interstate trade and cohesion. Additionally, each state recieved funds for expansion. The idea was to have the states themselves expand into new systems while the federal government focused on other projects. The idea worked and the states began expansion on their own.

The Pax Lacrimosa

What followed was a period of time called the "Pax Lacrimosa." This period saw galaxy-wide prosperity lasting from the reforms until about 7,000 BCE. The states expanded rapidly in population, productivty, and economy while the Triumvirate government was burdened less with governance. The Triumvirate was able to put much more resources toward large-scale projects such as Holo's Ring and the Demiurge settlement.

During this period, the majority of the species in the galaxy became integrated into the Triumvirate as member-states. The Molkor and some of the Ror Units became a part of the Triumvirate. Additionally, the Farlas joined as a member state under the state Mahou. The Vexlores came under the control of the federal government itself as they were integral to the creation of Holo's Ring.

War of the Final Transition

Post-War History

Imperial Government

As the name implies, the Triumvirate had official three heads of government, Legio, The Administrator, and Molonov.

As their civilization expanded to control the majority of Via Lacrimosa, even their vast intelligence could not keep up with the tasks presented. As such, they began relying on algorithms to do most of the governance. By 25,000 BCE, governance was entirely handled by the algorithms. The Three found themselves with more free time than they ever had before, allowing them to become more involved with their personal projects. They had no need to interfere with what was essentially an autonomous galaxy. All they had to do was occasionally give affirmation to the Algorithm to make sure it was unable to make drastic changes without their approval.

In addition to the algorithms was a massive bureaucracy made up entirely of Atlins, the first species integrated into the Triumvirate. They were responsible for routing corruption in the provinces, a task The Three believed the AI was ill equipped to handle. They approved new colonization projects, had limited control over resource allocation, and only answered to the Three, not to the people they governed.

Provinces

Each species integrated into the Triumvirate, save for the Atlins, were given a province to live in. The Province was made up of every system with a permanent population and a large number of stars known as a "buffer" which the inhabitants could freely use. Each province had a local government. Most of these governments were monarchies or technocracies. They were allowed to enforce their own laws if they did not contradict Triumvirate law. So long as they would operate without corruption, they were allowed to keep their limited independence. Most provinces were made up of millions of the stars closest to a species' homeworld.

The only species not contained in a province was the Atlins. They were within the "Federal Territory," the region of space between provinces. They were free to expand as they pleased so long as they notified The Three that they were doing so. They were more strictly scrutinized by the Three themselves, but as time went on they were more or less on their own in governance.

Diplomacy

Only a handful of nations coexisted with the Triumvirate, the most major of which being Sedrua. When The Triumvirate came to control Via Lacrimosa, The Sedruans still had great influence in Aylothn. Despite several attempts to create relations, the Sedruans would not even allow the leaders themselves to negotiate. Trade was non-existent. Other civilizations such as the Un'oit were largely ignored due to their lack of relevance on the galactic stage.

Federal Government

Territory

Based on various historical records, artifacts, and testimonies, the Triumvirate did indeed have the status of "Kardashev III." The vast majority of its energy came from Recurrent Nova Engines located in Ventemir, with the rest of their territory contributing little to their overall power consumption. It was much more efficient to strategically build power collectors in valuable parts of Via Lacrimosa than to take random systems. From these points they would deploy self-replicating probes designed to build infrastructure that would make true colonization easier.

At their peak, days before they fell, they had 450 billion stars in their sovereign control. The majority of these stars were in Via Lacrimosa, with only a relative handful existing in the satellites of Florescence, Ouranir, and Ventemir.

Infrastructure

The Triumvirate built the first Hyperlanes in Via Lacrimosa. By 70,000 BCE, there were large hyperlanes connecting various worlds to resource-rich areas such as the Yggdrasil Nebula. Most of the provinces remained isolated from this network, however. The Three reasoned that if the species under their control united, they would potentially be able to overthrow them, hence why the provinces would remain isolated from one another. Even so, provinces had robust internal networks that united most major worlds to the species' homeworld.

The Triumvirate constructed several billion Dyson Swarms throughout Via Lacrimosa and its satellites. The majority of which were used by the provinces and, later, states while only a minority were used by The Three directly.
