The United Federation of Star Systems, (often abbreviated as UFSS, and commonly called The Federation) is a nation controlling 12 galaxies and is present in numerous others around the Local Group. The nation is a Federal Republic and is the primary nation of Humans within the Local Group with a population that consists of almost 52% human. The Federation was one of the first members of the Confederacy of Borealis and has only existed in its current form as a member nation of the Confederacy.
The modern UFSS is technically a continuation of the original nation, formed in 2300. The nations of Earth united at this time, bringing forth an age of post-scarcity. Humanity planned on expanding further into the Solar System, expanding outward and fully colonizing major planets. With many areas combining and becoming semi-independent, the United Republic of Space Settlements (The name for the UFSS in its time) seemed to be a good solution for future Human cohesion. The UFSS would also fix numerous problems on Earth, launching Humanity into a state of post-scarcity.
What followed was a multi-decade plan focused on how to unite humanity while maintaining fundamental rights, and preventing any authoritarian governments. Many people (especially Martians, Jovians, Venusians, etc) were reluctant at the time, but they ended up liking the idea of a better system, of a tightly united Humanity.
After three decades of planetary colonization, the UFSS' top scientists uncovered a way to travel faster than light. This device, called the Warp Drive, was not particularly efficient when it was created. However, it threw Humanity into an entirely new age of space colonization. In the years following the innovation of FTL travel, areas in the outer Solar System were used as hubs for FTL probing and colonization. This made Uranus and Neptune uniquely common for such activity. As more time passed, places like Aeros were found and settled, and new corporations were founded. Humanity and its colonies were plunging into a golden age.
Eventually, colonization became more streamlined, and ways for FTL travel became faster. Humanity soon embarked on searching for intelligent lifeforms, which occured in the 2450s upon the discovery of the Stuugruiks. Non-sapient life on other objects was detected much earlier on Europa and Aeros. This pushed forward the idea of accepting foreign species into the UFSS, which eventually happened in the 3000s during a meeting on Aeros.
While it would take long swathes of years, the UFSS discovered more intelligent species, which joined the UFSS at some point. With time, the UFSS seemed more or less like a collection of many nations, with a loose but effective government. Expansion grew even more, and the UFSS contemplated forming a more universal and broad union.
Founding of the Lactean Confederacy
The UFSS, with many alien nations in and around it, decided to make an interstellar union called the Lactean Confederacy. In the historic year of 4001 CE, The UFSS, along with their allies, created the Confederacy in their own image. The UFSS' reach declined, with near independence being granted to member nations. Some nations, not wanting to be dragged into conflict, made and joined the Confederacy as a way of peace and prosperity across the Milky Way. For a long time, this proved to be true. The galaxy was experiencing a long time of prosperity often called the Pax Lactea.
During the Pax Lactea, the nation was able to expand to a much larger state. It occupied almost thirty percent of the Lactean Confederacy at its height, fairly accurately expressing the one in three individuals which were human. During this time, the federal government of the LaC was slowly taking power from the States. Towards the end of the Pax Lactea, the Federal government had so much control over the states that the nation was not even a Federation. The name did not change for the sake of keeping the people satisfied with the government.
The Imperial Era
The Pax Lactea ended at around 10k. This is when the government took a far more expansionist policy. Corruption meant that the politicians owed the wealthy systems or resources as payment. When all the systems in the LaC were already claimed, the government began having to take systems from outside of the border. This is when federal territory came into existence. The federal government began a campaign of rapid expansion and conquest. Small nations that had no desire to join the LaC were suddenly forced into it, overwhelmed by the military might of the nation.
The UFSS was given large amounts of territory to develop or settle that the federal government had no way to handle. Large swaths of the galaxy were filled with infrastructure with no one to inhabit it. The UFSS was instructed to use cloning, ad campaigns, and large numbers of other means to increase the population and settle these open areas. With this expansion, came a stark disparity between the numbers of humans created versus the number of nonhumans created. The UFSS handled the vast majority of settlement and, as a human nation, it naturally filled these areas with humans. This marked the beginning of the divide between humans and aliens. The growing human majority was at odds with the newly subjected individuals of the border territory of the UFSS.
Even after the debts were paid and the systems were colonized, the LaC continued expanding, leaving settling to the UFSS. The UFSS did not control the territory it settled, it simply had to colonize the federal territory.
The Split of the Lactean Confederacy
At the time, the nation's capital was on Mars rather than on Earth. The Split of the LaC brought huge numbers of deaths to the entire Lactean Confederacy, with some of the heaviest destruction happening in the UFSS. The Federation government managed to survive the entirety of the split, however, allying themselves with the remains of the Federal government on Earth. After the LaC reunited, the government of the UFSS managed to take back control as largely the same entity in 21827.
By the turn of the 40th century, about just 50% of Humanity was inside of the UFSS. This percentage had been decreasing slowly due to the creation and expansion of new human nations, like the Lewis Nations (30%) or Verpletter (8%), and the growth of human communities in Alien nations (12%) due to migration, such those found in the CUEN. By now, some of the Milky Way was mostly colonized, with only the most distant areas remaining untouched. Having learned from the Split of the LaC, the planets were shared with the various other species native to the Milky Way. Many alien nations ended up being provinces for the larger CoB (the predecessor of the LaC), although some smaller nations were absorbed into the UFSS itself since they were not large enough to maintain independence of their own.
By the time of the late 80th century, Wormholes were invented, which made intergalactic travel to galaxies like Andromeda much easier after setup. Many ancient Warp Generation Ships were sent to Andromeda and M110, and they arrived in the 124th century. This created a huge age of exploration for Humanity. Alongside the wormhole, which was getting its own major improvements, Humanity could pretty much go anywhere in the Local Group in a feasible amount of time. The gateways to the Ambrosia Galaxy provided by the Inox Forerunners also helped, making colonies appear in such areas in the mid 90th centuries.
Despite being a highly developed superpower, like most other intergalactic states the vast majority of space controlled by the UFSS could be considered "wild" space - with no sentient population and hardly any indication of UFSS control. Around a third of the UFSS' population reside in highly populated planets with a population in excess of 10 billion, while the rest live in a more scattered distribution, on the much more numerous "regular" planets with populations in the low billions, or the many minor colonies with populations ranging from dozens on medium-sized asteroids to hundreds of millions on relatively newly colonized terra planets.
Generally, humans are more somewhat present more in the sparser colonies and planets with less than 10 billion in population due to the expansionist culture and deliberate promotion by the human-dominated UFSS government. As the colonies have a higher natural population growth, this has resulted in the human proportion of the UFSS gradually increasing from some 39% at its conception to the slight majority it is today. On the other hand, non-human species are given significant benefits when settling in the large, diverse ecumenopolises, which while giving them access to many economic opportunities unavailable in the colonies, meant that their population growth would be stalled significantly.
In the slightly under one trillion star systems in the space controlled by the UFSS or associated polities, there existed 1,253,406 ecumenopolises (planets with populations exceeding one trillion), with 71,938 having a population above 10 trillion, 2,304 above 100 trillion, and just thirty-seven being home to over a quadrillion souls, which included massively important systems such as Sol. This number becomes considerably larger for planets with between 1 billion and 1 trillion in population, however, where the actual majority of populations reside. There are perhaps billions of planets with a population in the such billions, and the total amount of systems with physical UFSS presence in any way number nearly a hundred billion. This meant that the UFSS was one of the few states in the local universe with a population exceeding one hundred quintillion.
