Via Lacrimosa, alternatively called Effulgence or The River of Heaven, is a grand-design spiral galaxy possessing an active galactic nucleus with a diameter of about 120,000 light years. It is one of the largest galaxies in the universe as well as the main galaxy in the Lacrimosan Sub-group. The nearest galaxy to Via Lacrimosa is the Ejeunor Galaxy, a small dwarf satellite. Stars are considered to be a part of Via Lacrimosa so long as they are located within 60,000 lightyears of Nocturne, Via Lacrimosa's central black hole.

Politically, Via Lacrimosa is divided into over fifty civilizations which qualify as "intersteller." The largest of which is the United Federation of Star Systems, totaling at over 10 billion stars. The most populous nation within the galaxy is Sagittarium and the largest in terms of area alone is the Un'oit Collective. In terms of intergalactic standing, Via Lacrimosa is virtually unmatched as the origin point for some of the most powerful civilizations in the universe. For a large number of civilizations outside of the galaxy, one could easily trace their origins, at least somewhat, to Via Lacrimosa. Major civilizations such as The Lewis Nations and the Thulcandran Federation trace their origin directly to Via Lacrimosa.

A large number of events contributed to the modern astropolitcal setting of Via Lacrimosa, most notably the War of the Final Transition, the formation of the Confederacy of Borealis, and the War of the Ancients. From these events came the modern Via Lacrimosa galaxy, a galaxy dominated by democracies with only a handful of undemocratic states having any level of prevalence. Since the Commonwealth's Eclipse, Via Lacrimosan states had been a major influence on intergalactic affairs. As of late, especially since the War of the Ancients, the galaxy had lost its monopoly on influence to others such as the Aylothn Galaxy, Via Lacrimosa Galaxy, and Flower Galaxy.

Names

The name "Via Lacrimosa" comes from a the Yohjan name for the galaxy "Via Lacrimosa." "Via" was a prefix used to describe any galaxy; it roughly translates to "way" or "road" referencing the appearance of a galactic arm in the night sky. Lacrimosa means "weeping," likely a reference to the various wars fought throughout the history of the Yohjan civilization. The original Yohjan name was likely "Via Galaktea;" however, most data about the earliest Yohjan languages has been lost.

In other languages, such as Ravis, the galaxy is called "Effulgence," meaning "radiant splendor or brilliance." Via Lacrimosa dominated the night sky of the Ravis with a brightness rivalling that of even their largest moons. As such, they named the galaxy a word in their language which translates to Effulgence.

The last common name for the galaxy is "River of Heaven" originating from the Tenshin word for the galaxy. Its name is also a reference to how the galaxy looked from the night sky of the Tenshin home-world, however, it is the only common name to originate from a technological civilization rather than from a primitive one.

History

Pre-Modern History

The earliest evidence of civilization dates back to about 1.1 billion BCE to a planet known as Nagisa near to the Yggdrasil Nebula. This world was likely home to a fairly late Kardashev II civilization controlling a large portion of the galaxy. Most of the information about it comes from advanced meta-materials embedded in the soil of Nagisa that would only be available to such a civilization. The civilization is called "The First Civilization," given the lack of evidence for other Via Lacrimosan nations before it.

After several other civilizations that may have existed came Sedrua, a nation not of Via Lacrimosa but of another realm named the Suvaren Field. By about 80,000 BCE, Sedrua came to control a fairly large portion of Via Lacrimosa centered on the planet Hathia. The vast majority of it was an uncontrollable wilderness. There were no other civilizations save for the Un'oit who were far too dispersed for Sedrua to conquer and not important enough to contact. Most species in the galaxy were similarly deemed not worth the trouble of communication. Even primitive species were merely left alone and only observed from a distance. Thus the status quo remained for tens of thousands of years. With time, Sedruan leadership became complacent. With every nearby galaxy under their control, they began to stagnate, its leaders more concerned with matters in their home galaxy than in their vast networks of colonies.

After its peak, Sedrua slowly began shedding territory in the galaxy. Its holdings around Hathia grew increasingly difficult to maintain as there was no Hyperlane infrastructure to allow for easy and cheap travel. Over the next few thousand years, Sedrua continued losing influence as the Triumvirate Civilization rapidly expanded. This nation soon grew to be a competitor to Sedrua, causing tensions to rise between the two nations. Sedrua eventually confronted the Triumvirate Civilization in 61,814 BCE in what is known as the Sedrua-Triumvirate War.

What followed was an era in which the Triumvirate was the sole great power in Via Lacrimosa. They integrated every species into their empire, even including various primitive races that barely had the concept of extraterrestrial life. In this age, the three most powerful individuals in the known universe were the three rulers of the Triumvirate, Legio, Holo, and Aeluer. Their influence did not stop at the edges of Via Lacrimosa but extended into all of its satellites. Their unquestioned reign ended in 15,089 BCE when interval division gripped the Triumvirate's leaders. All at once, they lost control over the majority of their subjects. Without the usual constant enforcement, which ended during this internal dispute, the subjugated species of the galaxy very rapidly formed interstellar civilizations of their own. The Yohjan Confederacy, The Proto-Empyrean, Dotskgard and the Lowuks Entente were the largest of such civilizations formed the from once-subjugated races.

Meanwhile, a civilization named Regnum Aureiga, in which the Humeiga lived, was saved by Triumvirate. It was able to begin space exploration and meet the Humans and the Triumvirate in 15,362 BCE by crossing their wormhole. The encounter with humans will have an impact since the coincidence is that the two species are similar, and that therefore, an alliance between them will be made and will also help them for the foundation of Yohjan Confederacy.

From there, the galaxy entered a new, more crowded, era. With the total number of significant nations rising from only a handful to six, the astropolitical dynamic shifted greatly. At first, these nations were largely isolated from each other, and, in many cases, were completely unaware of the existence of the others. It took until 12,000 BCE for these new nations to even know the others existed, however, by then, a large portion of them were already well beyond type 2.0. These emerging powers soon entered a period of competition. While most certainly sister-nations all coming from the same place, their systems of government, general xenophobia, and unwillingness to cooperate causes tension to soon grip the galaxy.

By the 7,000's, almost all of the major nations in the galaxy became what is known as a Great Power, a nation capable of influence on the galactic scale. By this point, however, several of the nations began to shed their xenophobic tendencies to create alliances against what they believed to be greater threats. The nation most deemed to be a threat was the Yohjan Confederacy. Its imperialist practices, rampant xenophobia, and powerful military made it a threat far surpassing virtually anything else in the galaxy. The origin of what is known as the Local Axis is also around this time. It was an alliance between The Proto-Empyrean and The Lowuks Entente that, later went on to include Dotskgard as well.

Tensions began rising between the two major organizations, the Local Axis and The Yohjan Confederacy. Both of which were striving to become the sole master of the galaxy. This resulted in these nations beginning to become more and more expansionist with time. Letting the enemy gain the upper hand was unthinkable.

War of the Final Transition

Main Article: War of the Final Transition

The War of the Final Transition was the culmination of several millennia of tension between the Yohjan Confederacy and virtually all the nations around it. It started with an attack on The Proto-Empyrean by the Yohjan Confederacy amidst disputes over a valuable neutron star system. Normally, such disputes would not erupt into a full-scale war; however, tensions were so great that almost anything could have caused the conflict. The moment the attack happened, the YoC claimed it was "self-defense" and began mobilizing its forces immediately.

The war quickly escalated to involve most nations in and around the galaxy. Even so, the majority of the fighting took place between The Empyrean and Yohjan Confederacy. The war was greatly taxing for all sides, getting more so when the remnants of the Triumvirate began its own attack on both sides. The pressure was too much for the unpopular Yohjan government to handle, causing it to collapse in 0 CE. The Triumvirate fell to Entente forces in 210 CE.

Post-War Period

The Post-War Period is defined by the general anarchy experienced by most inhabitants at the time. The State of Tenshi and Erstes Konsortium formed during this period. Various organizations such as the Neo-Terrans and Omnite also formed in this time. The vast majority of nations forming lasted for less than a century before collapsing into themselves, as such, the average nation was small, often occupying a single star system.

Both the Empyrean and the Entente did all they could to enforce order from the occupied portions of the Confederacy. Their efforts went somewhat well until the effects of the war finally caught up to the Entente, causing it to collapse in 1,009 CE. Alone as the galaxy's sole great power, The Empyrean very quickly became the center of commerce. Smaller nations began fighting over trade routes to the Empyrean, all while it spread the state religion, Fuukanism, to further its influence.

The physical map of Via Lacrimosa

Arms

Via Lacrimosa has two major arms, the Anthrov Arm and the Svartálfar Arm. The name of the Anthrov Arm is derived from the ancient Yohjan Word meaning "human" due to it being the arm where the majority of humanity lives to this day. The Svartálfar Arm is named for a mytho-historical race of beings coming from a fairly widely held human mythology. The arms have other names; however, the human names have become far more common in official documents and maps.

There exist two sub-arms as well, the Chiai Sub-Arm and the Minami Sub-Arm. The meaning of these names are unclear, however, they likely come from the ancient Atlin words for the regions "Khai" and "Mimae." These regions are distinct as there exists regions of low stellar density between them and the rest of the arms.

Astrophysical Regions

The Core

The core is the most populous and most productive region of the galaxy. Out of all the regions, the core has the largest population and highest population density. It is controlled by the nation of Sagittarium. The core contains the central black hole known as Nocturne. Nocturne supplies the plurality of the energy in the core, with most of the rest generated by the massive stars common in the core.

Fortune's Ring

Surrounding the core is a region known as "Fortune's Ring," a region of space less dense than the core but not a part of any arm. Fortune's Ring is heavily influenced by Sagittarium. Despite this influence, the region is home to dozens of small nations all vying for dominance. These smaller nations are mostly leftover monarchies from the galaxy's more monarchical days. The rest are a myriad of experimental and unique forms of governance rarely seen elsewhere.

The Expanses

In between the two arms exist two regions of relatively empty space called the "Leer" and "Resplendent" expanses. The names of the expanses come from Erstes Konsortium's name of the region which roughly means "empty." The Resplendent Expanse comes from The Ravis word for the region that, when translated, means "Resplendence." The regions have a far lower density than the arms, lending to a lower population.

The Circuit of the Gods

The final region is known as the "Circuit of the Gods." This region is a circular region immediately outside of the galaxy with few stars. Its name also comes from a legend among the crews of military vessels in the region during the War of the Final Transition. Large numbers of reports of "god-like beings" residing in the region began appearing, hence the name. Later scans and reports give no indication that such beings existed. To this day, a large number of inhabitants of the galaxy believe the region to be the home of the legendary beings. Instead of literal gods per se, there are beings in the region known as The Ekrosian Guardians that spontaneously form from gas and other materials within the region. While dangerous when provoked, they are mostly inert.

Political Regions

The Martial States

The Martial States are states that, at one point, were ruled by a nation known as the Neo-Terran Co-prosperity Sphere. This expansive nation established monarchies in much of the nations in this region. Most of the Martial States have become a part of the Neo-Terran Intergalactic Hegemony; however, there still exist several that retain independence. The Martial States, despite being made up of a large number of species, are mostly inhabited by species very similar in appearance to humans. They are called the "Martial States" due to the name of the first emperor of the Sphere, Hal Drusus II, who was commonly known as "Mars."

Verpletter

Verpletter (coming from the Erstes word meaning "broken"), is a region of space that is filled with a large number of small states with varying ideologies. Located largely in the Fortune's Ring region, Verpletter is a valuable region filled with many large stars and abundant resources. The region had only been united once, during the early 80,000s CE, before being cut off from their colonizers. By the time contact was reestablished, the region fell into a state of chaos. Foreign powers could do little to restore order to the region.

Nearby Galaxies

While the Ejeunor Galaxy is the closest galaxy to Via Lacrimosa, there exist other major galaxies near it. Ventemir is the next closest galaxy followed closest by Ouranir. These two galaxies are visible in the night skies of most planets in Via Lacrimosa due to their sheer size and proximity. The most remote satellite is Florescence. The nearest major galaxy is the Aylothn Galaxy, one also visible in the night sky of most worlds. Aylothn is over twice the size of Via Lacrimosa

NTIH 3.088 Humans, Vexlores, Naidarans, Gainge, Farlas, Demi-Vexlores The Neo-Terran Intergalactic Hegemony is the largest nation within Via Lacrimosa as well as the most influential. Its monarchical system has been spread to many of the nations in the galaxy.

The Neo-Terran Intergalactic Hegemony (NTIH) is a large magocratic monarchy and one of the Martial States. It has influence over some 30 billion stars, a full third of the available stars within Via Lacrimosa. The NTIH is considered by many to be a, making it only the second of the Martial States to become one. It was formed in 97,821 CE, making it one of the youngest nations to have the status of superpower. At one point, the nation controlled the majority of the population of the galaxy and, at a later point, had influence far outside of Via Lacrimosa in galaxies such as Ventemir.

Regnum Aureiga

Flag Type Capital Founding Species Notes
Regnum Aureiga - Flag 3.003 Humeiga Regnum Aureiga has the third highest population and fifth highest economic output of any civilization in Via Lacrimosa

Regnum Aureiga is a large great power that, unlike most in Via Lacrimosa, is a oligarchy that does not even claim to be democratic. It is an ancient civilization formed well before most others in the galaxy in about 18,000 BCE. As one of the oldest civilizations in the galaxy, its historical records have been an invaluable source of information for history before the modern era. The Fusion of Crowns

Flag Type Capital Founding Species Notes
Crowns 2.982 Kshi, Humans, Vlanoans, Un'oit The Fusion of crowns is a Federal Monarchy ruled by one dynasty over 12 lesser monarchs. These monarchs rule 12 kingdoms, operate 12 distinct militaries, and most even have their own currencies.

The Fusion of Crowns is a Federal Monarchy and one of the Martial States. Its main inhabitants are an artificial android race known as the Kshi. The other inhabitants with representation in the 12 monarchies are Humans, Vlanoans, and Un'oit. Other species residing in the Fusion of Crowns, of which there are many, do not have any representation. There is no parliament nor constitution, making the only checks on the power of the crowns competition with other nations and each other. Even so, the Fusion of Crowns scores high on development indexes due to their association with a constitutional monarchy, the State of Tenshi.

For most of its history, the Fusion of Crowns had been a loose association of duchies, only banding together when an outside threat forced them to. They first united under a single dynasty in order to compete with the Dominium of United Duchies that neighbored them during the 60,000s CE. They remained united only due to pressures from the peasant class that demanded unity and, therefore, peace. Additionally, the Fusion of Crowns was far richer united than divided.

Alkan Intendancy

Flag Type Capital Founding Species Notes
Intendant II 2.908 (in total) Ror units, Humans, Vexlores, Atlins, Ravis, Thalians The Alkan Intendancy is a large polity made up of thousands of small kingdoms, republics, and other states

The Alkan Intendancy is an association of a large number of states located on the borders of Regnum Aureiga. It has one king who rules over thousands of lesser kings, dukes, presidents, bishops, prime ministers, intendants, and other politicians who, in turn, rule smaller nations. The Alkan Intendancy is not a singular state, but an association of many states slightly analogous to a Confederation. It is very unstable and most of its states are a remnant of the more feudal period of the galaxy's history.

Kal Federation

Flag Type Capital Founding Species Notes
Kal 2.912 Vlanoans The Kal Federation is a relatively small nation far from the core. It is not very dense.

The Kal Federation is a large civilization within Via Lacrimosa. Being so far from the core, the nation is very spread out. It relies heavily on its hyperlane network to transfer supplies across its length. The Vlanoans, descended from a Via Lacrimosan species called the Svaltálfar, are the last remnants of the Svaltálfar civilization. They have a monarchist system of governance, inspired by its neighbors in the galaxy; however, the Federation operates far more like a republic than a monarchy. The monarch is elected by popular vote and has to answer to a house of lords. These titles are remnants of a truly feudal age. The monarch is essentially a president and the house of lords is more analogous to a house of representatives.

Kristallaus

Flag Type Capital Founding Species Notes
Anarch ~2.8 Kristalls Kristallaus is a region of space, not technically a nation, as it managed to create a successful anarchist society. Much like its neighbors, there is a monarchy (explained below).

Kristallaus is a very unique nation for not only having implemented anarchy, but having a very unique way of maintaining it. There is no government in Kristallaus; however, there is governance. Rules do not come from the top but from the bottom. Individuals live in small-scale communes and collectively decide how to manage their commune. The people can choose to have larger meetings to discuss larger-scale issues; however, this gets difficult across interstellar distances. As such, the region remains incredibly vulnerable to more organized forces in the region.

Counteracting this natural weakness, a being known as Solomon of Kristadt defends the region from outside forces. This being, which is likely an artificial intelligence, is technically a king. The king has no official power nor sits atop a hierarchy; however, Solomon is referred to as "king" all the same. In addition to defending Kristallaus from outside threats, Solomon uses their fleet to maintain the system. Setting up any form of hierarchy in Kristallaus is futile.

Rendell

Flag Type Capital Founding Species Notes
Rendell 2.727 Humans, Thalians, Ekrosians Rendell is still technically a part of Sagittarium, but is officially its own nation.

Rendell is an electocratic democracy located in Via Lacrimosa. The nation was founded in 31,794 CE as a satellite state of Sagittarium. It gained partial independence when Sagittarium democratized and joined in 41,184 CE. It borders the Martial States despite not being one itself. It has a fairly modest size and population compared to nearby nations, but it has taken great care to live up to its original colonizer. Rendell has a large military in part due to generous funding it receives from Sagittarium and in part due to the fallout of the War of the Ancients. Rendell was hit hard during the conflict, so much so that the population has still not reached pre-war levels. The native Ekrosians only have a population in the trillions. Compared to the sextillions of humans within the nation, they are practically endangered.

Rendell, embracing its colonizer's culture, places great emphasis on its central black hole. They care so much about it that almost every inhabited world orbits within one lightyear of the body. The Ekrosian home world, Ekros, was moved to orbit it. Their technology regarding the colonization and utilization of black holes comes directly from Sagittarium, giving them one of the most developed black holes in Via Lacrimosa.
