The Warp Drive, also known as Gravity Drives, are a widespread form of propulsion relying on the warping of space to propel a craft. Warp Drives rely on the manipulation of dark energy to contract space in front of the ship and expand the space behind it, creating a Warp Bubble. This Warp Bubble moves at faster than light velocities relative to other places in the universe. Rather than the ship itself accelerating to light speed, thus violating numerous fundamental laws.
The Warp Drive is the most common and cheapest form of faster than light travel. Often the first developed and conceptualized by civilizations, the warp drive has the simplest construction of any form of FTL. Even pre-Kardashev I civilizations have been known to develop the technology. Its most commonly used in civilian ships where speed is less of a concern than is cost. Military vessels often use Electric Field Drives with some using higher dimensions as a means to move. Many craft do not use warp drives in favor of the usage of Hyperlanes, Wormholes, or SICTIRIAD generators, all of which are stationary and too expensive to allow for each location to have its own station. As such, Warp Drives are still commonly used by those desiring to visit less developed places.
Warp Drives take a tremendous amount of energy to run. For a craft to go significantly above the speed of light, it must use compact fusion reactors. For a craft to reach another star system in anything less than multiple years, antimatter needs to be used.
